Custom orders are fun and challenging. This Clover Bag pattern was created because of a custom purse order. Scroll down for the pattern. It includes 2 sizes. I like to line mine with fabric, so go check out my tutorial here. The ad-free pattern can be purchased here.
Sizes:
Small 7”W x 9”L (Large 12”W x 16”L)
Materials:
H Hook (5 mm)
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn #4 (Lily Sugar N’ Cream)
Scissors
Needle for weaving in ends
Optional – Fabric for lining
Gauge:
Gauge is not critical for this project, but you can change the size of the bag by going up or down in hook size.
Abbreviations (US terms):
CH – Chain
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Ch-sp – Chain Space
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Clst – Cluster Stitch (see special stitches)
Sk – Skip
St(s) – Stitch(es)
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong Side
Special Stitches:
Clst:
Yarn over, insert hook into stitch indicated, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops only. (2 loops left on hook)
Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops only. (3 loops left on hook)
Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops. (4 loops left on hook)
Yarn over, pull through all remaining loops.
Notes:
• Repeat sections are notated with * *
• Stitches inside ( ) parentheses indicate that all stitches are made into same st.
• Ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch
• Ch 3 DOES count as a stitch (alternatively, you can use a standing DC method)
• Ch-sp DOES count as a st, unless otherwise noted.
Instructions:
CH 27 (41)
1. HDC in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch. 26 (40) sts
2. CH 1, TURN. HDC in first and each st across.
3. Ch 1, TURN, HDC in first and each st across.
Rotate your piece so you are working along the side of the rows you’ve already completed. Work 5 HDC along the side. Rotate, and now make 26 (40) HDC along the bottom (foundation chain) of the piece. Rotate again, and work 5 HDC along the other side. Make 1 HDC in the same st as your first HDC. Join with sl st to first HDC of round. 63 (91) sts
You will now be working in the round.
4. Ch 1, dc in same st as join. Ch 3, sk next st. *Clst in next st, ch 1, sk 2 sts, clst in next st. Ch 3, sk 1 st, dc in next st. Ch 3, sk 1 st.* Repeat around. Sl st to first dc to join.
5. Ch 1, sc in same st as join. *Ch 3, sk ch 3 sp, sc in ch 1 sp between clsts. Ch 3, sk ch 3 sp, sc in dc.* Repeat around. Sl st to first sc to join.
6. Ch 1, dc in same st as join. *Sk ch 3 sp, clst in sc, ch 3, and clst in same sc. Sk ch 3 sp, dc in next sc.* Repeat around. Sl st to first dc to join.
7. Ch 1, sc in same st as join. *Ch 2, sc in next clst, ch 2, sc in next clst, ch 2, sc in dc.* Repeat around.Ch 2, sl st to first sc to join.
8. Ch 1, dc in same st as join. Ch 3, sk same st as join and ch 2 sp. *Clst in next st, ch 1, sk ch 2 sp, clst in next st. Ch 3, sk ch 2 sp, dc in next st. Ch 3, sk ch 2 sp.* Repeat around. Sl st to first dc to join.
Repeat rounds 5-8 until piece measures 7 (14) inches, ending after a row 6.
Top of bag
1. Ch 1, sc in same st as join. 1 sc in each st, and 3 sc in each ch 3 sp around. Sl st to first sc to join.
2. Ch 1, sc in same st as join, and each st around. Sl st to first sc to join.
3. Ch 1, Dc in same st as join. Dc in next st. Ch 1, sk next st. *Dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st.* Repeat around. Sl st to first dc to join.
4. Ch 1, sc in same st as join, and each st around. Sl st to first sc to join.
Cut yarn, weave in ends.
Tie Closure
Ch 101 (121), Sl st in 2nd hook from ch, and each remaining ch. Cut yarn, weave in ends. Weave tie in and out through the ch spaces made in top of bag.
Strap
Ch 121
1. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch.
2. Ch 1, turn, hdc in first and each st across.
3. Rpt row 2
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail to sew to bag.
Finishing:
Sew strap onto bag, and weave in all ends. Add fabric lining (optional).
