Book Cover - Free Crochet Pattern

Crocheting and reading. Two of my long-time loves. They have been brought together with this book cover pattern. And you can't go wrong with the classic granny square. This is an easily adjustable pattern so you can make multiple sizes to fit any book in your library. Or, if you prefer reading on a kindle, it doubles as a kindle cover!

Materials:

Size H (5mm) crochet hook
Worsted Weight Yarn #4 (Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton) 1 skein
Stitch Markers
Scissors and Needle for weaving in ends
Button

Notes:
Gauge is not critical to this pattern
Pattern has modifications to adjust the size for your favorite book

Abbreviations (US terms):
Sl St – Slip Stitch
CH – Chain
CH SP – Chain Space
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
St(s) – Stitch(es)
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong Side


Instructions:

Granny Squares (make 4)

Make slip knot. Ch 5, sl st to first ch to make a ring.

1. Ch 3 (counts as first DC). Work the following all in the foundation ring: [2DC, CH 2, 3DC, CH 2, 3DC CH 2, 3DC, CH 2] Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. Sl st across the next 2 sts and into the corner ch sp.

2. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), [2DC, CH 2, 3DC] in corner ch sp. *Ch 1, in next corner ch sp, [3DC, CH 2, 3DC].* Repeat around. Ch 1, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. Sl st across the next 2 sts and into the corner ch sp.

3. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), [2DC, CH 2, 3DC] in corner ch sp. *Ch 1, 3DC in next ch sp, Ch 1, in next corner ch sp, [3DC, CH 2, 3DC].* Repeat around. Ch 1, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. Sl st across the next 2 sts and into the corner ch sp.

4. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), [2DC, CH 2, 3DC] in corner ch sp. *Ch 1, 3DC in next ch sp, Ch 1, 3DC in next ch sp. Ch 1, in next corner ch sp, [3DC, CH 2, 3DC].* Repeat around. Ch 1, sl st to top of ch 3 to join.

Cut yarn, leaving long tail. Repeat above instructions until you have 4 squares.

To make a smaller square for a smaller book, stop instructions at round 3.

To make a bigger square for a bigger book, continue making a ch 1, 3DC in each side ch sp, and [3DC, CH 2, 3DC] in each corner space for another round until you reach the desired square size.

Sewing Squares
Whip stitch the 4 squares together to make a long strip. 
Sew the short ends together to make a loop.
Sew the bottom of the loop together to form a pouch.

Top of book cover

1. Attach yarn to any ch sp at top of book cover. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), 2DC in same ch sp. *CH 1, 3DC in next ch sp* Repeat around. Ch 1, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. Sl st across the next 2 sts, and into the next ch sp.

2. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), 2DC in same ch sp. *CH 1, 3DC in next ch sp* Repeat around. Ch 1, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. Sl st across the next 2 sts, and into the next ch sp.

3. Repeat round 2 

4. Repeat round 2

5. Ch 1, SC in ea st and ch sp around. When you get to the center back of the book cover, Ch 8 for your button loop, and continue SC around.

FINISHING
Sew on button, and weave in any remaining ends.
