Wanderlust Bag - Free Pattern

I wanted to make a bag pattern similar to my Wanderlust Cowl design. I realized that since I was making two panels, there would be lots of color changes and lots of ends to weave in. I don't know about you, but I try to avoid weaving in lots of ends because it is such a pain. Then I had a moment of inspiration. What if instead of weaving in ANY of the ends, I left them long to create the fringe on the bag?!?!?! Suddenly, my bag pattern was even better than I originally imagined. Materials:

Size H (5 mm) hook

Worsted Weight #4 Cotton Yarn in 4 colors (I used a combination of Crafter's Secret Cotton and I Love This Cotton)

Color A (white) Crafter's Secret - Ivory

Color B (orange) Crafter's Secret - Papaya

Color C (gold) I Love This Cotton - Antique Gold

Color D (teal)  Crafter's Secret - Dark Teal

Button

Scissors

Needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations (US terms):

CH – Chain

Sl St – Slip Stitch

SK - Skip

HDC – Half Double Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

Hdcfront3rdloop - HDC in front 3rd loop (see special stitches)

Puff V st – Puff V Stitch (see special stitches)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

RS – Right Side

WS – Wrong Side

Notes:

Worked in two panels

Cut the yarn when switching colors. Do NOT weave in ends, knot two strands together and at the end we will trim the strands for the fringe. 

Repeat sections will be noted with *  *

Special Stitches:

Puff st: 

Yarn over, insert hook and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook)

Yarn over, insert hook and draw up a loop (5 loops on hook)

Yarn over, insert hook and draw up a loop (7 loops on hook)

Yarn over, insert hook and draw up a loop (9 loops on hook)

Yarn over, and draw through 7 loops on hook.

Yarn over, and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook. 

Puff V st:

Complete 1 puff st as seen in instructions above, ch 1, repeat puff st instructions in same stitch indicated.

Hdcfront3rdloop:

With WS facing you, locate the loop in the front, below the 2 loops that are usually worked.

Instructions:

Cut yarn every time you change colors, leaving a 4 inch tail. Do NOT weave in ends, these will become your fringe. 

1. With color A. Ch 30. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch. 29 sts

2. Color A. Ch 1, Hdc in each st.

3. Color B. Ch 1, Hdc in each st. 

4. Color A. Ch 1, Hdcfront3rdloop in each st.

5. Color C. Ch 1, HDC in first st. *Ch 1, sk 1 st, HDC in next st.* Repeat across. 

6. Color A. Ch 1, HDC in each st and ch sp. 

7. Color D. Ch 1, HDC in first st *sk 1 st, puff v st in next st. Sk 1 st, HDC in the next st.* Repeat across.

8. Color A. Ch 1, hdc in first st. *3HDC in puff v st sp. HDC in next HDC st.* Repeat across 

9. Color C. Repeat row 5.

10. Color A. Repeat row 6.

11. Color B. Ch 1, HDC in each st. 

12. Color A. Ch 1, Hdcfront3rdloop in each st.

13. Color C. Repeat row 5.

14. Color A. Repeat row 6. 

15. Color D. Repeat row 7.

16. Color A. Repeat row 8.

17. Color C. Repeat row 5.

18. Color A. Repeat row 6. 

19. Color B. Ch 1, HDC in each st. 

20. Color A. Ch 1, Hdcfront3rdloop in each st around. 

Cut yarn.

Make 2nd panel just like the 1st, but do not cut yarn after last row. 

Joining the 2 panels:

With WS facing each other, and RS facing out, SC panels together along the side of your panels. Make 1 SC per row. Keep the strands for your fringe behind the SC you make.

At the corner, 2 SC in the corner st. Continue along the bottom (foundation chain) and SC in each ch across.

At the corner, 2 SC in the corner st. SC up the other side of the panels just like above. 

When you get back to the top of the bag. SC AROUND the top of the bag (do NOT join the panels at the top.

Cut yarn. If you can, tie the end with one of the other strands so you don't have to weave it in.

Knot 2 strands of the ends together and repeat all along the sides of the bag. Trim the fringe on the sides to desired length.

Strap:

CH 151 (I'm 5'8", so adjust the length of the strap as needed.

1. SC in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch. 150 sts

2. CH 2 (or standing DC), TURN. DC in each st across. 150 sts

3. Ch 1, TURN. SC in each st across. 150 sts.

Cut yarn, sew strap onto bag.
