Cora Earwarmer - Free Crochet Pattern

I may be slightly obsessed with cables. And that may be an understatement. I love the look of cables in both knitting and crocheting. My Cora Hat and Cowl patterns were the first of my crochet patterns to feature cables. And since I cannot seem to get enough of them, I made a Cora Earwarmer that uses the same cable patterns. Materials:
I Hook (5.5mm)
Worsted Weight Yarn #4 (CaronSimply Soft) Approximately 150-200 yards
Scissors
Needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:
15 sts, 8 rows in DC = 4 inches
I tend to crochet tightly, so check your gauge and adjust hook size accordingly. You may need to go down a hook size.

Abbreviations (US terms):
CH – Chain
Sl St – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet
FPTRC – Front Post Triple Crochet
Sk – Skip
St(s) – Stitch(es)
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong Side


Notes:
Ch 2 DOES count as HDC
Ch 3 DOES count as DC

Photo Tutorial

This photo tutorial is to help you identify in which stitches to do your BPDC on the wrong side rows.

1. When working into the 2 st cables, BPDC into the st that crosses over the front first.

2. Now BPDC in the next FPTRC.

3. Now working into the 6 st cable, BPDC into the sts that cross over the front first. Starting with the last FPTRC from the previous row.

4. Now BPDC in the 3 sts that were crossed over in the previous row.

Instructions:

With 5.5mm hook,
CH 20

1.       DC in 4^th ch from hook (the first 3 ch count as a DC). DC in the next 16 ch. (18 sts) RS

2.      Ch 2 (DOES count as HDC), turn. HDC in the next st (NOT the same st as the turning ch). BPDC in the next 2 sts. FPDC in the next 2 sts. BPDC in the next 6 sts, FPDC in the next 2 sts, BPDC in the next 2 sts. HDC in the next st. HDC in the top of the CH 3 from the first row. (18 sts) WS

3.      Ch 2 (DOES count as HDC), turn. HDC in the next st (NOT the same st as the turning ch). Sk 1 st. FPTRC in the next st. Working in FRONT of the previous st, FPTRC in the skipped st. BPDC in the next 2 sts. Sk 3 sts, FPTRC in next 3 sts. Working in FRONT of the previous sts, FPTRC in first skipped st, FPTRC in 2nd skipped st, FPTRC in 3rd skipped st. BPDC in next 2 sts. Sk 1 st, FPTRC in next st. Working in front of the previous st, FPTRC in skipped st. HDC in next st. HDC in top of Ch 2. (18 sts) RS

4.      Ch 2 (DOES count as HDC), turn. HDC in the next st (NOT the same st as the turning ch). BPDC in the next 2 sts. FPDC in the next 2 sts. BPDC in the next 6 sts, FPDC in the next 2 sts, BPDC in the next 2 sts. HDC in the next st. HDC in the top of the CH 2 from the previous row. (18 sts) WS

5.      Ch 2 (DOES count as HDC), turn. HDC in the next st. Sk 1 st. FPTRC in the next st. Working in FRONT of the previous st, FPTRC in the skipped st. BPDC in the next 2 sts. FPDC in next 6 sts. BPDC in next 2 sts. Sk 1 st, FPTRC in next st. Working in front of the previous st, FPTRC in skipped st. HDC in next st. HDC in top of Ch 2. (18 sts) RS

6.      Repeat row 4

Repeat rows 3-6 until your earwarmer measures approximately 21 inches long (or desired length).

With right sides together, sl st the ends of the earwarmer to join. Turn work back to right side.

Finishing:
Cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail.

Option 1: Use needle to cinch the middle of the earwarmer, and wrap it around a few times and weave in ends.

Option 2: Alternatively, if you don’t want to cinch the middle of the earwarmer, simply weave in ends and leave the earwarmer flat.
